Azerbaijan, UAE Forge Stronger Military Ties
The defense letter of intent materialized during high-level discussions between Aliyev and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi, where leaders celebrated accelerating partnership momentum, Azerbaijan's presidency confirmed in an official statement.
Parallel to defense agreements, both nations finalized a commercial transaction involving Azerbaijan's minority shareholding in Southern Gas Corridor CJSC, which will be transferred to XRG—the global investment division of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), the presidential statement detailed.
"During the conversation (between Aliyev and Al Nahyan), they emphasized that Azerbaijan-UAE bilateral relations are based on a strategic partnership," the statement said, adding that leadership from both nations discussed relationship trajectories and upcoming diplomatic engagements.
Reciprocal presidential exchanges have proven instrumental in deepening connections, the statement noted, while talks specifically addressed the Peace Shield-2026 joint military drill between Baku and Abu Dhabi, currently underway in the UAE from Feb. 2-3.
"They expressed confidence that such exercises contribute to the development of operational military interoperability between the two countries' armed forces, and underscored the importance of continuing them in the future," it also said.
Both presidents projected that the newly signed agreements would inject fresh momentum into Azerbaijan-UAE relations, according to the statement's conclusions.
"The conversation also touched on the possibility of establishing twinning relations between Baku and Abu Dhabi," it added.
