AWS UAE Data Center Fire Triggers Widespread Service Outages
"At around 4:30 AM PST (1230 GMT) one of our Availability Zones (mec1-az2) was impacted by objects that struck the data center, creating sparks and fire," Amazon said in its statement.
Emergency crews responding to the blaze were forced to cut power to the entire facility in order to contain the flames. "The fire department shut off power to the facility and generators as they worked to put out the fire," the company said.
As of its latest update early Monday, Amazon warned that restoration efforts remain far from complete. "full recovery is still expected to be many hours away," the company stated at 12:52 AM PST (0852 GMT), urging customers to "backup any critical data, to another AWS Region."
The incident unfolds against a volatile geopolitical backdrop. On Saturday, the United States and Israel launched a sweeping joint offensive against Iran, killing several senior Iranian officials, among them Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran has since mounted retaliatory drone and missile strikes directed at Israel and Gulf states housing American military assets — raising urgent questions about the origin of the objects that struck the AWS facility.
